Dr Nikhil Sapre | Urological Surgeon Toowoomba

MBChB, PhD, FRACS

Nikhil Sapre is a Urological Surgeon with his practice based in Toowoomba and Darling Downs region. After completing his urological training in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).

Nikhil aims to understand the problems affecting his patients and make an accurate diagnosis. He will then counsel patients on their treatment options and empower them to make an informed decision based on their preferences and situation. Where appropriate, Nikhil offers minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) surgical treatments to help his patients return to their families and doing what they love as soon as possible.

The final year of his training was spent in New South Wales specialising in open and advanced laparoscopic surgery for urological cancers. He was then selected to undertake sub-specialist fellowship training in robotic surgery and urological cancers at the prestigious Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London, United Kingdom. In London, he was involved in over 150 robotic procedures under the tutelage of world-renowned surgeons such as Professors Prokar Dasgupta and Ben Challacombe. He also learnt holmium LASER prostatectomy for benign prostatic enlargement whilst in London and is one of the select few urologists in Queensland trained to perform this procedure. He was awarded an Australasian Urological Foundation scholarship for his fellowship training in the United Kingdom. He is excited about offering these cutting edge urological treatments and care to regional communities in Queensland.

Nikhil is passionate about research and teaching. He has completed a PhD where he was instrumental in developing more accurate and less invasive tests to better diagnose and treat prostate and bladder cancers. During this time, he was the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships for his research work, which was presented at both local and international conferences. He has published several papers and written book chapters in the areas of prostate, bladder and kidney cancers and on the latest advances in robotic surgery.

Nikhil is regularly involved in training and supervising the next generation of urological surgeons. Combining his passion for living in regional Queensland and training of junior doctors, he collaborated with the University of Queensland to create a video promoting the benefits of living, training and working as a urologist in Toowoomba.

Nikhil was the first urology trainee in Toowoomba in 2014 and enjoyed working and living in this town so much that he chose to make it his home after finishing his training. He is married with two children and his wife is a GP practicing locally in Toowoomba. Outside of work, he enjoys cricket, keeping fit and travelling.

Nikhil treats all urological cancers and benign urological conditions including performing:

All complex cases are discussed at multidisciplinary meetings, where Nikhil works with radiation and medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and cancer nurses. If treatments are needed that Nikhil does not routinely offer, he is happy to arrange a referral to his colleagues specialising in that area.
